As you know, or maybe you don't... Ellie and I have been involved in the horse industry since land before time. You'll see, if you're in our VIP group on Facebook, that we attend several horse shows throughout the summer and enjoy riding our horses at our beautiful farm in La Grange, Ky. Something we enjoy, but actually aren't involved in, would be Horse Racing and specifically the Kentucky Derby. Here in Kentucky, that's where we live (super close to Madison, Indiana), horse racing, it's traditions and the festivities take over the end of April and the beginning of May. We celebrate big time, starting with the kickoff, which is "Thunder Over Louisville."
Everyone is busy around town getting their outfits in order and their parties planned for the big day - Saturday May 6th. Now most, including us locals, celebrate something nearly every day this week leading up to the big race. In store, at McWhiggin's we really don't go all out like we used to when it comes to decorating. Back in the day, when we were in La Grange, we would decorate a few weeks leading up to Derby week, selling all sorts of horse themed gifts and toys. Today we celebrate with Breyer Model Horses! Breyer does a fantastic job at showcasing famous racehorses, and this year, most importantly - Secretariat is in the spotlight.
This year we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Secretariat's '73 Triple Crown winning! Secretariat is considered the greatest racehorse of all time and thanks to Breyer Model Horse we now have a few unique options in stock.
